Helica instruments Ltd is a British company based in Edinburgh, Scotland and was formed in 1993 by the founder and the developer of the "Helica TC" Mr Maurice M. Howieson.
The name Helica is an abbreviation of Helium - Ion - Coagulation and which specifically refers to the Helica TC an electro-surgical device commonly known as the Helica which in effect is a Helium Thermal Coagulator.
Working together with the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, problems we faced were overcome and our solution, the Helica Thermal Coagulator was put to the test by standards authorities and medical specialists alike.
The innovative thinking and hard work was rewarded by a John Logie Baird award for innovation by HRH Duke of Edinburgh.
Gynaecoloists were the first of the surgical community to recognise the benefits of the Helica as being a more efficient and safer alternative to Diathermy or Laser especially when treating laparascopically "Endometriosis".
Helica Instruments Ltd are constantly researching and developing its generator unit and probes for them to be used in a variety of surgical procedures. With the help of many Consultant Gynaecologists who have assisted us in our trials we are now manufacturing open surgery cutting probes and laparoscopic cutting & coagulating probes, which are now used in several different, operating procedures. These include but are not limited to the removal of fibroids (myomectomy), ovarian drilling & the division of adhesions.
Helica Instruments Ltd has also been continuing to develop new products, not all relating to the Helica TC. We are now very excited about our contribution in other medical specialties such as ENT, Ophthalmic, Orthopedic & general surgery.
The Helica Thermal Coagulator now carried out over 40,000 operations in the UK, with great success & without a single surgical complication being reported. There are 170 centres throughout the UK who have chosen the Helica TC as their preferred option.
As more and more surgery is being performed on a day case basis, surgeons are constantly looking for an electro surgical device that is:
